A nature trail that overlooks the sandy beaches of the east coast of Piombino. The botanical peculiarity of the Coastal Park of Sterpaia, resides in the monumental dimensions reached by some plants: ash trees, turkey oaks and oaks, with trunk circumferences of a few meters. But even more important is the landscape value of the area, which represents a typical example of the landscape of the high Maremma of the early twentieth century. The Park extends for 296 hectares, 17 of which are sandy shores, for a development of about 10 km of coast, 124 hectares among dune areas. and back dunes, 155 hectares of woodland and agricultural glades. The Archaeological Park of Baratti and Populonia stretches between the slopes of the promontory of Piombino and the Gulf of Baratti, and includes the area where the the Etruscan and Roman city of Populonia. In the lower part of the park you can visit the two necropolis of the Etruscan phase, the limestone quarries and the industrial districts, where the hematite ore from the deposits on the Elba island was worked. In the upper part you can visit the acropolis of Populonia, with its temples, buildings, mosaics and streets of the Roman period. From the Gulf of Baratti a wonderful panoramic road will take you to the village of Populonia, where you will find craft shops, shops, typical products and as well as taverns and restaurants. From the Castle Tower you will see a 360° panorama of the whole promontory; the Elba island, Corsica, Capraia and Gorgona will appear as if by magic before your eyes!
